Where's the nuance?

Ironically, "fake news" is itself a fake epithet, because it is not a binary concept. Despite the black and white origins of mainstream media, the world we live in has always been revealed to us in a spectrum of colors. In reportage, such a spectrum should be provided by nuance. Hence, "fake news" is not entirely fake, in that there is usually (though not always) a smattering of truth to it, although whatever truth factor exists is often slathered by hyperbole.

Unfortunately, nuance in global "news" reportage is rapidly vanishing. It is being subsumed by hyperbole. There are no longer any comparatives; everything is superlative: all/none; best/worst; black/white; biggest/smallest; darkest/brightest. Where's the nuance?

Just a few examples from recent headlines:
Apparently, according to today's news reportage, we don't need no stinkin' nuance. I beg to differ. Without nuance, it's not news. It's just propaganda.

“VATICAN CITY – In an Easter peace wish, Pope Francis on Sunday praised the framework nuclear agreement with Iran as an opportunity to make the world safer, […] Francis made his first public comments about the recent framework for an accord, reached in Lausanne, Switzerland, and aimed at ensuring Iran doesn't develop a nuclear weapon.” [emphasis added]

Although I am not a Roman Catholic, I have no problem with the concept that the Pope is infallible on matters concerning the Catholic Church. And personally, I believe the Pope is a peace-loving individual, as am I. But beyond the realm of the Church, I believe the Pope is subject to human fallibility, to the same extent that any other well-meaning intelligent person is.

I believe the problem, which many people have with grandiose pronouncements made by powerful and influential individuals, is that one must have a grain of salt within reach whenever one is within earshot (or within comprehension) of said pronouncements. Make no mistake, when a politician like Barack Obama says the word "doesn't", he almost always means "does" (and vice versa). For example, recall Obama's oft-repeated pledge, "If you've got health insurance, you like your doctor, you like your plan -- you can keep your doctor, you can keep your plan. Nobody is talking about taking that away from you". This, of course, is known in common parlance as "pure unadulterated bullshit".

The so-called "BFD" with Iran is the most irresponsible agreement any American President has ever foisted on the United States and its allies. It is a most perverse enabling of Iran's goal to acquire a stockpile of nuclear weapons. And this BFD, which is claimed to be "aimed at ensuring Iran doesn't develop a nuclear weapon”, is in fact a plan that is aimed at ensuring Iran does develop a nuclear weapon.

Happy Easter to one and all.

Go Duke!

On What Racism Is Not

There's racism. There's not racism. This is not racism.

Liberals would have us believe that racism is the expression of a view that does not strictly align with their leftist worldview. I must unequivocally dissent from such an illiberal viewpoint.

Those of us who do not subscribe to the leftist worldview are of the opinion that our worldview aligns well with what is referred to, in the sane part of the world (admittedly a diminishing arena), as common sense.

Common sense is not racism.

The High-Tech Stultification of Our Teens

“Enough with complaining that young people these days are addicted to their phones. The question you should be asking is: What do they know that you don't?

Believe it or not, there are advantages to using technology like a teen. I asked a handful of 11- to 17-year-olds to tell me what apps and gear they couldn't live without. They taught me to question my own habits: Why do I use email to talk with friends? Why do I only share my best photos?

Teens are among the most creative users of technology, in part because they don't have adults' assumptions about how things are supposed to work.

'I will just throw away the directions and see what I can make of it', Kapp Singer, a 14-year-old from San Francisco, told me.

Owning a smartphone, often a hand-me-down, means many teens can be pretty much always online, changing how they stay in touch with friends and express themselves.”
— Personal Technology Columnist Geoffrey Fowler, Updated June 10, 2014 (WSJ)

Today's teens are masters of utilizing high tech for communicating with their peers. So what is the problem?

The problem is they spend all their time communicating with their peers. It would be far better, instead, if they spent some time learning something of interest to communicate, besides how to utilize the latest high tech for communication. Our teens have been captured by a stultifying Mobius strip of high-tec communication.

Once these high-tech-savvy communicators "grow up", they will be poised to become the great mass of high-tech consumers. Their only problem then will be to market their own skill set, the same one they share with all their peers, in order to make a living. Unfortunately for them, only their grandma gives a Shinola when they express themselves.

My septuagenarian eyes have seen it all ...

   Матушка Россия                         Liberty                       Captain Hopey-Dopey

As a toddler, my mind's eye saw the glory of a people's indomitable spirit in vanquishing the Nazi invaders of Mother Russia. The sheer magnitude of the Russians' sacrifice and their magnificent determination to survive is virtually incomprehensible today.

Several years later, my child's eyes saw the glory of Anglo-American victory in General Eisenhower's American Occupation Zone. 'With malice toward none, with charity for all', the Lincolnian spirit permeated Western Europe.

A couple of years later, my young eyes saw the glory of American Liberty. With the clothes on our backs and indelible memories of the Allies' victory over Nazi Germany's depravity, our American dream had begun.

During the following decade, my eyes saw the glory of the American pursuit of happiness. Life was good. Truly. Even dreaded polio had been conquered.

And then it began to unravel. The flower children got bored. The greatest expansion of general well-being in recorded history was no longer good enough. The pursuit of happiness became a drag, man. Sex, drugs and rock and roll were where it's at, man. But they had to be free, man. Like, we're not into pursuit, man. That's too much like work, man.

And that ignorant beat goes on to this day. The poster child for that dope-smoking generation of no-accounts is now the putative leader of Western civilization! Lord have mercy.

My eyes have seen depravity. My eyes have seen the magnificent will to survive. My eyes have seen the worst of humanity. My eyes have seen the best of the human spirit.

Alas, I have now witnessed the seemingly inevitable stupidity that Big Al had predicted all along.

“A top Democratic official conceded Tuesday that the health care overhaul should have been "more precise" in acknowledging the possibility that some Americans would lose their current insurance plans -- even as the White House defended its past statements on the law.

The admission from House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer comes after a 2010 document emerged that predicted millions might be dropped by their providers.

The document helped explain why thousands are already getting cancellation notices and being guided toward new plans. It also gave new meaning to Nancy Pelosi's infamous remark, shortly before the complex legislation was approved in March 2010, that "we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it."

Hoyer said Tuesday that officials knew some health plans would not qualify under the new ObamaCare regulations. He said the overall message to the public was accurate -- just not precise enough.”

Hiding in plain sight.

As everyone knows, the answers to some puzzling questions are occasionally right in front of our noses. Enrico Fermi's famous paradox may well be just such a question.

Suppose the extraterrestrials (ET) had already visited Earth; perhaps even as long as a billion years ago, or more. It seems likely that, rather than establishing a permanent colony here, they only stayed long enough to leave a message for some future native intelligence to decipher. How would they safeguard such a message from destruction over potentially extremely long periods of time?

As others have speculated, a prime candidate for such an indestructible medium of information would be DNA, especially the so-called noncoding DNA that, presumably, would be less susceptible to evolutionary alteration. Moreover, in order to maximize the survivability of the ET message, the ET visitors would choose those DNA-vehicles that are the most nearly ubiquitous form of all — bacteria.

Furthermore, the ET would want to insure that such DNA-vehicles were both prolific as well as abhorrent to more evolved species, in order to maximize the survivability of their message carriers.

Which now brings us to the follow-up question for Fermi's paradox: What medium in our biosphere is loaded with bacteria, is ubiquitous, and is universally shunned by sentient beings?

I strongly suspect that it is shit.

To those Jews planning to vote for Obama:

Are you prepared to explain to your children not the principles upon which your vote is cast, but its probable effects upon them?

Irrespective of your endorsement of liberal sentiments, of fairness and “more equal distribution,” will you explain to your children that top-down economic policies will increasingly limit their ability to find challenging and well-paid work, and that the diminution in employment and income will decrease their opportunity to marry and raise children?

Will you explain (as you have observed) that a large part of their incomes will be used to fund programs that they may find immoral, wasteful and/or indeed absurd? And that the bulk of their taxes go to no programs at all, but merely service the debt you entailed on them?

Will you tell your children that a liberal government will increasingly marginalize, dismiss and weaken the support for and the safety of the Jewish state?

Will you tell them that, in a state-run economy, hard work may still be applauded, but that it will no longer be rewarded?

Will you explain that whatever their personal beliefs, tax-funded institutions will require them to imbibe and repeat the slogans of the left, and that, should they differ, they cannot have a career in education, medicine or television unless they keep their mouths shut?

Will you explain to them that it is impossible to make a budget, and that the basic arithmetic we all use at the kitchen table is not practiced at the federal and state level, and to suggest that it should be is “selfishness?”

Most importantly, will you teach them never to question the pronouncements of those in power, for to do so is to risk ostracism?

Are you prepared to sit your children down and talk them through your vote on the future you are choosing for them?

Please remember that we have the secret ballot and, should you, on reflection, vote in secret for a candidate you would not endorse in public, you will not be alone.” [emphasis added]

“The Romney-Obama debate was bizarre for so many reasons. Usually spin masters needle the media immediately to “prove” that their so-so candidate won. But after this debate, almost no one made the argument that Obama was close to winning — so great was the risk for even a toadying media to look ridiculous and so clear-cut the ineptness of the president. Instead, the eventual spin veered to why Obama lost (e.g., altitude, a supposed tranquilizer, a supposed mysterious Kleenex for Romney, a national security crisis, etc.) and was the stuff of fantasies. […] But on this occasion, the Left went nearly ballistic, in blaming Obama more than Romney for letting them down, as if a Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Andrew Sullivan, or Chris Matthews had been personally betrayed, sold out, or even played for suckers, as if they were to admit something like “we at least expect you to show up when we do so much to cover for you.” […] The common denominator here is the old story of the vast gulf between the reality and mythology of Barack Obama. Although Obama had sometimes shown some of the smarmy cool and set-speech fluidity of a John Edwards, otherwise there was never much evidence that Obama had ever excelled in debate or repartee — perhaps explaining why he wisely had consented to the fewest press conference and one-on-one Q-and-A press sessions of any recent president. His reliance on the teleprompter has no recent presidential parallel, but was always wise even for the briefest of appearances. And yet even here, the chameleon-like set-speeches quickly become monotonous and the faux cadences jarring rather than clever. Obama’s real preferences are instead for brief puff appearances on favorable, celebrity TV and radio shows that tend to enfeeble rather than sharpen his own analysis. […] But despite all that, the nation has now seen that the conservative critique of Barack Obama — fluff without substance — was frighteningly accurate.” [emphasis added]
— Victor Davis Hanson, October 7, 2012 (pjmedia.com)

Yeah, "fluff without substance" pretty much sums up the Hopey-Dopey-Empty-Chair-in-Chief. Better still, how about "a fluff and a puff", "fluff" as in "anything light, soft, or fuzzy" and "puff" as in "smoke and mirrors". Now you [think you] see it; now [and forevermore] you don't.

Perhaps out of 60 million watchers, the debate that ate Obama's [free] lunch has woken up a few more useful idiots who couldn't comprehend the obvious: Obama has been hiding something because, you know, he has something to hide! Yes, I know that's tautological. But nothing says "obvious" like a tautology.

And for those schmucks that still can't figure out the obvious: Obama has been hiding all his so-called "scholarly achievements", the non-existing supporting evidence for the Valerie Jarrett verbal BJ:
I think Barack knew that he had God-given talents that were extraordinary. He knows exactly how smart he is. … He knows how perceptive he is. He knows what a good reader of people he is. And he knows that he has the ability — the extraordinary, uncanny ability — to take a thousand different perspectives, digest them and make sense out of them, and I think that he has never really been challenged intellectually.
But now it is abundantly clear that Obama is a fuzzy, lightweight ne'er-do-well, as well as a confident hard-smokin' charlatan (provided, of course, he has his palace guard — the leftist media — shielding him from scrutiny, along with his teleprompters, training wheels, high chair, and nappies close at hand, as it were).

Surprised? I'm not. It is an intuitively obvious consequence of Obamacare, the 2,000+ pages of obnoxious legalese that no rational individual could possibly comprehend in its entirety. And it would have to be comprehended in its entirety, because piecemeal comprehension couldn't possibly take into account any internal contradictions.

Do you think there are no internal contradictions buried in 2,000+ pages of legalese, written by a committee of (il)legal monkeys working for Pelosi? Have you been off your meds lately because you can no longer afford them?

Here are a couple of other questions to consider: What percentage of these discontented doctors voted for Obama? Of the malcontents who happen to live in Pelosi's district, what percentage voted for that lunatic? Do you have any sympathy for these malcontents who can not intuit what is in their own best interest? Recall all those doctors who were campaigning in support of Obamacare? Do they have any feelings of remorse? Self pity? Self respect?

One final question: Will the obnoxious Left manage to find a way to blame George Bush for this steaming pile of bloody horseshit?

[…] The baby born into dire poverty might belong to a family in Bangladesh, and the one born to extravagant luxury might belong to a family in America. Whose fault is this disparity or injustice? Is there some specific society that caused this? Or is it just one of those things in the world that we wish was very different? […] Making a distinction between cosmic justice and social justice is more than just a semantic fine point. Once we recognize that there are innumerable causes of innumerable disparities, we can no longer blithely assume that either the cause or the cure can be found in the government of a particular society. […] If you study history in addition to geography, you are almost forced to acknowledge that there was never any realistic chance for all peoples to have the same achievements -- even if they were all born with the same potential and even if there were no social injustices. […] Every group trails the long shadow of its cultural heritage -- and no politician or society can change the past. But they can stop leading people into the blind alley of resentments of other people. A better future often requires internal changes that pay off better than mysticism about one's own group or about "social justice".”

Timshel — thou mayest. You are born into circumstances not of your choosing. But you are born with choices you can make. Your life is a combination of events over which you have no control and the choices you make. That's about it. The sooner you realize these facts of life, the sooner you can proceed with the life you choose to live.

We have all been conditioned to hearing the wisdom of the ages distilled down to bumper-sticker philosophy, such as: "You are what you eat"; "Be all you can be"; "Shit or get off the pot"; and many other such catchphrases. My own colloquial favorite is: "You is what you is, mofo. Deal with it." But the Judeo-Christian God's admonition says it all: "Timshel!" You have choices. It's your call.

We have all heard admirable stories of individuals who overcame incredible obstacles on their way to great achievements. Some of these stories are actually true. But not everyone is capable of such heroic efforts. To varying degrees, however, we are all capable of incorporating an optimization strategy to make the best of the hand we've been dealt. Some do; many don't. Those who do have chosen an active role in shaping their destiny. Those who don't choose passivity — "Poor me." "What did I do to deserve this?" "How come I can't have an iPod like Johnny has?" "Why won't George Bush leave us alone?"

Liberals like Barack Obama cultivate the "Poor me" demographic. They want people to remain mired in the dead-end state-of-mind so that they can promise them free lunch in return for their vote. It is that simpleminded a strategy. Fine. They provide you with government cheese, while they jet to Martha's Vineyard to snack on caviar and Pinot noir. Yeah; that sounds fair to me, provided you have chosen to be a loser all your life.

The ball is in your court, mofo.

I was recently admonished by a leftist liberal, who asserted smugly, "It’s clear that all that money spent sending Henry to charm school went to waste." I cherish such admonishment. It tells me that my commentary has made some leftist jerk uncomfortable.

But my meager talent to charm a leftist pales in comparison with Bill Wittle's reading of the Riot Act in the video, above.
