“... it is we who are now destabilizing the climate, but it is also true that the climate has fluctuated suddenly in the past between very different states. If this happens again — whether triggered by our doings or not — it will have dire consequences for us. Because we're able to prevent or moderate major changes in the climate, we must do so — for the same reason that we must look out for and destroy asteroids that might collide with Earth.” [emphasis added]
— Lee Smolin, Time Reborn, p. 255.

Lee Smolin is a brilliant theoretical physicist. When applied to many theoretical physicists, "brilliant" might be deemed redundant. But in the case of Smolin (and a handful of others) "brilliant" is an intensifier — Smolin is brilliant squared. He is also a person of abundant integrity. He has the mental ability to not only probe the mysteries in the extrema of scales (from the Plank to the cosmic) but also to analyse complexities within socioeconomic theories.

In the case of the so-called "climate change" controversy, however, I think his analysis overlooked the key issue that bedevils the opposing contenders. The proponents, who favor a massive financial effort to moderate climate change, believe in the perfectibility of human nature. The opponents of such massive expenditures of wealth do not.

Smolin conjoins conceptually the effort to intercept asteroids that may pose a threat of annihilation to life on Earth, with the effort to moderate a sudden change in climate. But these two threats, both of which deserve our attention and our ambition to preclude them, are different beasts. The asteroid effort would be the purview of science and technology supported by funding from wealthy nations, without much (relatively speaking) controversy over how the funding was allocated. It would be analogous to the ongoing effort for the International Space Station mission.

The climate change effort is a beast of different color. From the get-go, the slimy charlatan profiteers saw the huge opportunity to cash in. If the world's political leaders comprised a plurality, which was within shouting distance of Lee Smolin's integrity, and had a smidgen of his intellect, something akin to the effort being made at CERN might have been possible.

But let's face it, the cost of addressing critical and worthy causes confronting our world far exceeds the available funding. So what are we to do? We can only do cost/benefit analyses to prioritize them. The climate-change advocates have poisoned the well of good will. The huge sums that have already been "spent" have largely been wasted via corruption and propaganda. I don't see any possibility of turning around this ugly state of affairs. Not in my own lifetime; and perhaps not even in the lifetime of my grandchildren. Whatever funding is available is much better spent on efforts that are not already infested with bloodsuckers.

“[The Obamacare] bill was written in a tortured way to make sure CBO did not score the mandate as taxes. If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies. Okay, so it’s written to do that.  In terms of risk rated subsidies, if you had a law which said that healthy people are going to pay in – you made explicit healthy people pay in and sick people get money, it would not have passed… Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. “A top Democratic official conceded Tuesday that the health care overhaul should have been "more precise" in acknowledging the possibility that some Americans would lose their current insurance plans -- even as the White House defended its past statements on the law.

The admission from House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer comes after a 2010 document emerged that predicted millions might be dropped by their providers.

The document helped explain why thousands are already getting cancellation notices and being guided toward new plans. It also gave new meaning to Nancy Pelosi's infamous remark, shortly before the complex legislation was approved in March 2010, that "we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it."

Hoyer said Tuesday that officials knew some health plans would not qualify under the new ObamaCare regulations. He said the overall message to the public was accurate -- just not precise enough.”

“[John Cassidy] I met Eugene Fama in his office at the Booth School of Business. I began by pointing out that the efficient markets hypothesis, which he promulgated in the nineteen-sixties and nineteen-seventies, had come in for a lot of criticism since the financial crisis began in 1987, and I asked Fama how he thought the theory, which says prices of financial assets accurately reflect all of the available information about economic fundamentals, had fared.

[John Cassidy] Thanks very much. Finally, before I go, what about Paul Krugman’s recent piece in the New York Times Magazine, in which he attacked Chicago economics and the efficient markets hypothesis. What did you think of it?

Can the federal system be fixed? I certainly hope so.

Can this administration be saved?" I fervently hope not.

Why would anyone want to save an administration that, in my opinion, is worse than useless? This administration is malevalent.

And since this Democrat Senate is controlled by the execrable Harry Reed, who is in thrall to this President, the latter can not be convicted in any impeachment proceedings.

So the next best outcome is federal gridlock. What's not to like?

I welcome surceace from obnoxious and incessant political machinations. May the federal shutdown last until the next Presidential election. Amen.

The Constitution of the United States of America

Image via Theo

The most precious document of civilized humanity, by civilized humanity, for civilized humanity, extant.

Related source » Theo Spark: Enemies of the Constitution: 'via Blog this'
[This related source is recommended in its entirety.]

“Perhaps the stupidest idea given an airing in a recent edition of The New York Times is Prof. Louis Michael Seidman’s opinion, 'Let’s Give Up on the Constitution'.

According to his commentary, Prof. Seidman has "taught constitutional law for almost 40 years" and he was "ashamed" it took him that long to conclude that it was an outdated, "bizarre" document.

Apparently, President Obama, who was a lecturer in constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School, arrived at that conclusion more swiftly. His disregard for the Constitution recently got a slap down from the courts that ruled his recess appointments to the labor relations board were unconstitutional insofar as the Senate was not in recess.

I am not a constitutional scholar, but it should be self-evident that the oldest living constitution in the world has served to create and maintain the greatest republic in the world. Prof. Seidman asserts that Americans have “an obsession” with the Constitution and that is a very good thing indeed. Without it, we would likely have fallen prey to tyranny.

[…]

The argument that the Constitution is an outdated document ignores the fact that it has been amended twenty-seven times and remains the gold standard of law in America.

There are many enemies of freedom and Prof. Seidman’s opinion is just one example, a reflection of the way some intellectuals hold the rest of us in contempt.

One of the greatest plagues on mankind was the notion of communism, the product of Karl Marx’s hatred of private property — the keystone of the Constitution — and the view that people should be seen as a collective, not as individuals. The Constitution affirms that the power of government resides in "the people" who, as individuals, determine who shall "represent" them and are to be protected against the arrogance of power that spawns the inclination to "rule" rather than represent.

The Framers of the Constitution understood this. It is the only thing that stands between us and a tyrannical government run by Progressives, Liberals, and Marxists.”
— © Alan Caruba, 2013

Let's get one thing straight from the get-go: Prof. Seidman should be ashamed it took him 40 years to conclude that he was an irredeemable ignoramus.

The Constitution is the centerpiece of what Mortimer J. Adler called the "the American Testament", comprising the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, in which Lincoln defended the Declaration and the Constitution. In my opinion, Dr. Adler's book "We Hold These Truths" qualifies as the American citizen's testament, which deserves a place of honor on every American's bedside table.

Like Dr. Caruba, I am not a constitutional scholar either. But I would wager that, like many proud Americans, Dr. Caruba and I have a singular appreciation for the unique excellence of the Constitution and the ideals it embodies. Unlike the phony scholars Seidman and Obama himself, who denigrate and desecrate this most enlightening treasure of our unique Republic, Americans who have not succumbed to the "progressive" insanity currently holding our Nation in thrall, understand that the Presidential Oath of Office obligates every President to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States". Every decent American should be offended, nay outraged, that Barack Hussein Obama is not only in contempt of his Oath of Office, but he is, in fact, attempting to circumvent the Constitution at every opportunity.

The people of the United States appear to be, in large part, unaware that their fortune and their sacred honor is under insidious attack by the very people who have been entrusted to defend them. The President, the Vice President, the President's Cabinet Officers, half the Supreme Court, the Majority Leader of the Senate, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, the majority of the mainstream media, and millions of progressive liberals, not to mention the tens of millions of intellectual midgets (including many of the aforementioned) are all trying to destroy what the Framers, President Lincoln, and millions of patriotic Americans lived and died for.

Don't let the bastards get away with it.

“In the aftermath of the cringe-worthy debate performance by Vice President Joe Biden — dubbed Dr. Strangelaugh by James Taranto — it’s easy to be bewildered by where this bizarre election is headed. […] What’s going on with these guys [on the left]? […] As someone who spent over three decades on the left as a liberal-progressive-whatever, I believe I have some sense of how they think and feel. And I have a strong suspicion that at this moment they are not feeling good, no matter what their protestations. I further suspect some, it’s hard to say how many, are even beginning to question long-held views. How this will translate at the voting booth, it is again difficult to say. Political beliefs — most often inherited or adopted early in life — are notoriously difficult to change just in and of themselves. Add to that the perils of conflict and confrontation with family, friends, employers, and co-workers, not to mention the potential for disintegration of self-image, and you have a perfect prescription for inertia. And yet we are [at] a moment when more people than ever in recent memory are being forced to think. […] We have, in essence, gone beyond the Bradley Effect, if that ever existed, to a Faux Ideology Effect (someone can think of a better term). Liberals can pretend to be liberals all they wish to friends, family, employers, and co-workers, but more and more of them will privately vote conservative. The country and the world hang in the balance. Time has long run out on liberal posturing. Thank Joe Biden for reminding us of that.”

“In other words, a large portion of the American public has effectively been brainwashed. And the brainwashers are the Democratic Party and the mainstream media. […] Journalists fear for their jobs and their jobs are increasingly precarious. If they change their opinions, even investigate the possibility that the other side might have some reasons, quite often they are out the door. So not only do they toe the line, they are disinclined even to consider alternatives in their minds, consciously or unconsciously, because those alternatives are dangerous to their livelihood. […] They have seen the same things we all have and know that the economy (the very heart of America) is failing. And they know deep down that they are responsible for some of it, because they bought and promoted Barack Obama as if he were a messiah without the slightest bit of vetting. Obama was anointed, not elected. To this day no one knows who he is, possibly even Obama himself. And deep down these journos are embarrassed by this (who wouldn’t be?) but they can never never admit it. To do so would injure their self-image and self-respect to the level of personality disintegration. So this shame is projected out in rage and, yes, loathing toward you, me, Mitt Romney, and anyone else who might deign to disagree with them. […] It is, after all, projection. Ideology is but a pretentious cover for rage. […] For to wander off the reservation is a road to penury. And who wants that now more than ever with the number of media jobs contracting? Of course, the ones who are screwed by this song and dance are you and me — the American public. And no doubt some day the journalists themselves. If Obama wins, they will rejoice on election day. But they will shortly be throwing up. In the words of Brillat-Savarin, 'You are what you eat'. (Actually he said, 'Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are' — a yet more delicious irony).”

“What I call “Securitygate” — the release of the most intricate details about the cyber war against Iran, the revelations about a Yemeni double-agent, disclosures about covert operations in and against Pakistan, intimate details about the Osama bin Laden raid and the trove of information taken from his compound, and the Predator drone assassination list and the president’s methodology in selecting targets — is far more serious than either prior scandal. David Sanger and others claim that all this was sort of in the public domain anyway; well, “sort of” covers a lot of ground. […] Here is the crux of the scandal: Obama is formulating a new policy of avoiding overt unpopular engagements, while waging an unprecedented covert war across the world. He’s afraid that the American people do not fully appreciate these once-secret efforts and might in 2012 look only at his mishaps in Afghanistan or his public confusion over Islamic terror. Ergo, feed information to a Sanger or Ignatius so that they can skillfully inform us, albeit with a bit of dramatic “shock” and “surprise,” just how tough, brutal, and deadly Barack Obama really is. Yet these disclosures will endanger our national security, especially in the case of a soon-to-be-nuclear Iran. They will probably get people killed or tortured, and they will weaken America’s ability for years to work covertly with allies. […] There is nothing in the recent “exclusive” writings of David Sanger or David Ignatius that was necessary for the American people to know at this stage, unless one thinks that […] we should have been apprised about what was really going on in New Mexico in 1944 [the top secret Manhattan Project]. Here is why Securitygate is a national outrage and goes to the heart of a free and civil society.”

I believe that Barack Obama deserves to be impeached by the House of Representatives for his duplicity and mendacity, which, I believe, borders on treason. If he were impeached, however, I do believe the Democrat-majority Senate would acquit him.

Nevertheless, he would, in the course of the impeachment process suffer the indignity that he far-more-richly deserves than Bill Clinton did for the Lewinsky scandal. Clinton's scandal, at least, did not endanger the security of the Nation that all Presidents solemnly swear to "preserve, protect and defend."

In my estimation, if Obama was impeached he would treat us to another Clinton-like weasel expression:
"It depends on what your meaning of mendacity is".

On razors, heuristics and time …

Dreams, schemes and constraints …

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln (Photo credit: paukrus)

“Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?” — Robert Browning

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” — Albert Einstein

“Occam's razor is the law of parsimony, economy or succinctness. It is a principle urging one to select, from among competing hypotheses, that which makes the fewest assumptions and thereby offers the simplest explanation of the effect.” — From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Heuristics refers to experience-based techniques for problem solving, learning, and discovery. Where an exhaustive search is impractical, heuristic methods are used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution. Examples of this method include using a rule of thumb, an educated guess, an intuitive judgment, or common sense.” — From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

“Definition of expediency: the quality or state of being suited to the end in view : suitability, fitness” — From Merriam-Webster.com

“We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth. Other means may succeed; this could not fail. The way is plain, peaceful, generous, just -- a way which, if followed, the world will forever applaud, and God must forever bless.” — Abraham Lincoln

In case you haven't noticed, humanity is at war. The World War of the Third Millennium (WW III) is, like its immediate predecessor of the 20th Century (WW II), a many-front war: Judeo-Christian morality and ethics versus Islamist barbarism; Western Civilization versus Seventh-century brutality; Conservative and Libertarian realism versus Leftist hallucinations and totalitarianism. WW III comprises all elements of imperfect human attributes — the good; the not-good; the noble; the execrable; the realistic; the batshit-crazy; the sensible; and the very, very ugly. It's an all-out food fight in the Animal House of Earth.

It doesn't look good for humanity's last best hope — the Leftist cretins want to replace it with hopey-dopey. Oh, alright already, so they aren't all cretins; some of them are merely delusional; others are truly evil; the rest are hopelessly-clueless free-lunchers. You all know who's who.

I have no objection to Robert-Browning-like enthusiasm and idealism. I have always believed in the nobility and utility of higher-than-likely-to-succeed goals, especially for the young, whose great advantage is a distant horizon. Youth needs to be idealistic. But there are time constraints. None of us will get out alive; and for those of us who reminisce about our personal mid-life crises, that once-distant horizon seems just around the corner, to blend a couple of metaphors.

The message is clear to all but those who will not see: it's showtime, crunch time, now or never. There's no time left for daydreaming, bullshit or hopey-dopey. Shit or get off the pot, goddammit! The Vandals are at the gate, the inmates are in control of the institutions, and Obama's head is in the sand trap at the 57th hole.

Don't let the bastards get you down. It's not complicated. Traditional America is the good guy, virtually the only good guy remaining, along with Israel. Practically all others are either evil, or blood-sucking, or useless.

Eff 'em if they can't take a joke. Vote; and make it count before we're down for the count.

— President Barack Obama, Osawatomie, Kansas, December 6, 2011

“Milton Friedman once said that every time capitalism has been tried, it has succeeded; whereas every time socialism has been tried, it has failed. Yet President Obama has oddly claimed that we’ve tried free-market capitalism, and it “has never worked.” This is rather remarkable. Since 1800, the world’s population has increased sixfold; yet despite this enormous increase, real income per person has increased approximately 16-fold. That is a truly amazing achievement. In America, the increase is even more dramatic: in 1800, the total population in America was 5.3 million, life expectancy was 39, and the real gross domestic product per capita was $1,343 (in 2010 dollars); in 2011, our population was 308 million, our life expectancy was 78, and our GDP per capita was $48,800. Thus even while the population increased 58-fold, our life expectancy doubled, and our GDP per capita increased almost 36-fold. Such growth is unprecedented in the history of humankind. Considering that worldwide per-capita real income for the previous 99.9 percent of human existence averaged consistently around $1 per day, that is extraordinary.

What explains it? It would seem that it is due principally to the complex of institutions usually included under the term “capitalism,” since the main thing that changed between 200 years ago and the previous 100,000 years of human history was the introduction and embrace of so-called capitalist institutions — particularly, private property and markets. One central promise of capitalism has been that it will lead to increasing material prosperity. It seems fair to say that this promise, at least, has been fulfilled beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. Yet people remain suspicious of capitalism—and more than just suspicious: as the Occupy Wall Street movement is only the latest to have shown, we seem ready to indict capitalism for many of our social problems. Why?

A widespread consensus is that capitalism might be necessary to deliver the goods but fails to meet moral muster. By contrast, socialism, while perhaps not practical, is morally superior — if only we could live up to its ideals. Two main charges are typically marshaled against capitalism: it generates inequality by allowing some to become wealthier than others; and it threatens social solidarity by allowing individuals some priority over their communities. Other objections include: it encourages selfishness or greed; it “atomizes” individuals or “alienates” (Marx’s term) people from one another; it exploits natural resources or despoils nature; it impoverishes third-world countries; and it dehumanizes people because the continual search for profit reduces everything, including human beings, to odious dollar-and-cent calculations.

The list of charges against capitalism is long. But some of the charges are not as strong as might be supposed. Take community. Capitalism gives us incentives to trade and associate with people outside our local community, even complete strangers, not on the basis of our love or care for them but out of our own — and their—self-interest. So capitalism enables people to escape the strictures of their local communities. But is that bad? Capitalism creates opportunities for people to trade, exchange, partner, associate, collaborate, cooperate, and share with — as well as learn from — people not only from next door but from around the world — even people who speak different languages, wear different clothing, eat different foods, and worship different gods. The social characteristics that in other times and under different institutions would lead to conflict — even violent, bloody conflict — become, under capitalism, irrelevant — and thus no longer cause for discord. Capitalism encourages people to see those outside their communities not as threats but as opportunities. It gives us an incentive to look beyond our narrow parochialisms and form associations that would otherwise not be possible.” [emphasis added]

OK; I get it. No, really, I do get it. You, your parents, and probably your grandparents, too, have always voted Democrat. Most likely, you have voted Democrat because, as "everybody knows", Democrats are for the little guy, the poor sap who struggles and toils just to put food on the table, gas in the car, and electric charge in all the family iPhones. And all the while, you're ducking the bill collectors, because you charged your maxed-out credit cards an extra spur-of-the-moment trip to Disneyland.

But just stop and think for a moment. How does "everybody know" that Democrats are for the little guy? Well, for one thing, all those "little guys" in Holyshitwood, whom you admire and adore, keep telling you it is so. Is Barack Obama really for the little guy? Or is he for the little guy's vote, so that he, his wife, and his kids can continue living like the so-called "fat cats" he continues to denigrate in his non-stop reelection campaigning?

You don't have to be a poor sap all your life. You can do much better; not by voting for Obama, but, rather, by understanding that Obama is playing you like a sap, and all the scumbags in Holyshitwood are, too.

Obama is a charlatan; that is, "a person practicing quackery or some similar confidence trick in order to obtain money, fame or other advantages via some form of pretense or deception". And what is the specific trick that Obama makes use of? Lying. He is a bald-faced liar. And how does he get away with it? Well, you poor sap, because you are too lazy to invalidate the bullshit that emanates from his mouth every time he opens it.

I do understand you, you poor sap. But I have no sympathy for you. That may sound harsh. But my bluntness is well-intentioned. Because I know you can do much better, if only you weren't intellectually lazy.

Get a grip. More importantly, get a life. Stop asking for hand-outs from Obama, and stop seeking advice from Holyshitwood. None of them are your friends. They simply get off on your misplaced adulation.
