The Metric of Our Universe

Entropy: The Metric of Our Universe

Credit: Wikipedia
In the beginning was the event known as the Big Bang. At that initial event of infinitesimal spacetime, the entropy of our universe was at its minimum, corresponding to its maximum organization — at a point in space and at the beginning of time.

Ever since that initial event, our evolving universe (or its current cycle of evolution) has had its overall entropy increasing monotonically, albeit its rate of increase has been nonmonotonic. The nonmonotonic rate of increase has been due to the counter effects of gravity, the emergence (and evolution) of organizational phenomena that create pockets of decreasing entropy in spacetime, as well as the observed (though not yet understood) effects of dark energy.

Thus, we have traversed a chronology of cosmic spacetime-epochs, including the Planck epoch, the cosmic inflation, the Quark epoch, the Photon epoch, the "Dark Ages" (during which the universe was transparent but no large-scale structures had yet formed). Then followed the period of large-scale structure formation, including stellar evolution, galaxy formation (and evolution) and the formation of galaxy clusters and superclusters. The latter period has been characterized by local reductions of entropy corresponding to all the large-scale structure formation, all of which qualified as reductions in the disarray of matter.

The thin disk of our galaxy began to form at about 5 billion years ago. The solar system formed at about 4.6 billion years ago, with the earliest traces of life on Earth emerging by about 3.5 billion years ago. These epochs, up to and including the present time have been characterized by the emergence and evolution of (self) organizations with the concomitant localized decreases of entropy.

That universal metric, entropy, or, what is more nearly correct, its local decrease (called "negentropy" by Erwin Schrödinger), may be viewed as the lifeblood of our existence. As this lifeblood waxes, our existence flourishes. As it wanes, we hurtle towards heat death.

Nevertheless, there may be an ultimate reversal to the expansion of the universe (the "Big 180"), in which the universe (at least its current cycle) will end in a Big Crunch, after which a Big Bounce might initiate another new cycle, in endless repetition ...

It could happen.

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.”

70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz

On January 27, 1945, Russian troops from Marshal Ivan Konev's
1st Ukrainian Front(*) liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp.

(*)During World War II, a Russian "army front" was the equivalent of an Anglo-American "army group". The front's name was typically a reference to its geographical location at the time of its military formation. Hence, the "1st Ukrainian Front" was the designation for the front (of Russian armies) that was leaving Russia behind and moving into the Ukraine (and subsequently into Poland) in its pursuit of the Wehrmacht (which was retreating toward Nazi Germany).

I don't know who the author of the above op-ed article is. More importantly, I don't know what she is talking about. Most importantly, neither does she.

The war that Israel has been engaged in for the past 66 years (and counting) is not a PR war. There have been many misnomered "wars" since media hacks have begun styling themselves "warriors" of words: media wars; political wars; war against cigarettes; war against poverty; war against hunger; war against women; war against old white men; war against whatever ailes you. None of these describe's Israel's war.

Israel and its people are engaged in — and its people have been engaged in since time immemorial — existential war. Existential war is a war that nobody can afford to lose. The losers cease to exist.

L'Chaim (to life)!

“I admit I didn’t much care for Barack Obama before the revelation that he had secretly written Khamenei to induce the Iranian supreme leader to sign a nuclear deal in return for U.S. help battling ISIS. Now I despise our president. He is contemptible.

Ayatollah Khamenei is a man who has been leading the massive chants of “Death to Israel” (and the Jews) literally every day since 1979. Only a true anti-Semite could attempt to make a secret deal with such a person. Indeed, someone who would want to make a deal with Khamenei has about as much respect for human rights in general as Torquemada. That person would have to be an unmitigated liar and sociopath.

And such a person is our president, […]

It’s hard to know what motivates this man, our president, but it’s not so hard to know what motivates the gaggle of Jewish Democratic politicians — you know who you are […] Chuck Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, Richard Blumenthal, Al Franken, Jerrold Nadler, Adam Schiff, etc., etc., who let him get away with that behavior and make a deal with a country that wants to eradicate Israel and then move on from there to whatever else is in sight (Yemen, these days). They are pathetic lackeys and careerists of the most slimey sort who would fit in well, as I said elsewhere, in Berlin, 1937.”

“It is the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a time for the Jewish people to repent for their sins and ask others for forgiveness for any wrongdoing.

In that spirit, please accept my open apology to my fellow Jews. I have truly put you all in danger.

On November 6, 2012 I took part in a historic event in of which I am very ashamed. In fact, I am quite embarrassed. I helped put into the White House an imposter and a fervent enemy of the Jewish people. Barack Hussein Obama.

Maybe my wrongdoing is more forgivable because I am not alone, I am part of the 70 percent of Jews who put an enemy of the Jewish people into the highest office in the world. Was I just a follower? Was I misled?

It seems that Jews on a whole tend to vote for people who don't like them, to side with their enemy. Maybe it's some weird Stockholm syndrome. […] ”

Maybe God will forgive you. But you won't get any forgiveness from me, you moron.

I used to be a typical-liberal of Jewish ancestry, too. But when Obama came along, I smelled a Jew-hating rat from the get-go. You don't have to be an Ashkenazi genius to see through that empty suit.

People Ask Me Why

People ask, "TheBigHenry, why does the Left disgust you so?"

The following excerpt from the Maverick Philosopher is as good an answer as any:
Related source » Why is the World Becoming Such a Nasty Place?: 'via Blog this'
[This related source is recommended in its entirety.]

“I would add that to understand the Left you must understand that lefties typically leap to the defense of the perceived underdog regardless of what the underdog has done to deserve the treatment he receives.  Right and wrong don't come into it.  The relative weakness of the underdog is taken to justify his criminality while the decent people who defend themselves are urged, quite absurdly, to show restraint. The terrorist entity, Hamas, whose charter calls for the destruction of the state of Israel, understands this, a fact that lends a bit of sanity to their otherwise insanely self-destructive attack on Israel.  They seek the sympathy of the morally obtuse Left. This morally disgusting characteristic of leftists is also illustrated by the recent furor over so-called 'botched executions.'  They take the side of the scum of the earth while not even mentioning the suffering of the innocent victims.”

My septuagenarian eyes have seen it all ...

   Матушка Россия                         Liberty                       Captain Hopey-Dopey

As a toddler, my mind's eye saw the glory of a people's indomitable spirit in vanquishing the Nazi invaders of Mother Russia. The sheer magnitude of the Russians' sacrifice and their magnificent determination to survive is virtually incomprehensible today.

Several years later, my child's eyes saw the glory of Anglo-American victory in General Eisenhower's American Occupation Zone. 'With malice toward none, with charity for all', the Lincolnian spirit permeated Western Europe.

A couple of years later, my young eyes saw the glory of American Liberty. With the clothes on our backs and indelible memories of the Allies' victory over Nazi Germany's depravity, our American dream had begun.

During the following decade, my eyes saw the glory of the American pursuit of happiness. Life was good. Truly. Even dreaded polio had been conquered.

And then it began to unravel. The flower children got bored. The greatest expansion of general well-being in recorded history was no longer good enough. The pursuit of happiness became a drag, man. Sex, drugs and rock and roll were where it's at, man. But they had to be free, man. Like, we're not into pursuit, man. That's too much like work, man.

And that ignorant beat goes on to this day. The poster child for that dope-smoking generation of no-accounts is now the putative leader of Western civilization! Lord have mercy.

My eyes have seen depravity. My eyes have seen the magnificent will to survive. My eyes have seen the worst of humanity. My eyes have seen the best of the human spirit.

Alas, I have now witnessed the seemingly inevitable stupidity that Big Al had predicted all along.

“The oldest known veteran of World War II was honored with a thunderous standing ovation during a ceremony Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, as President Obama and the rest of the nation paid tribute to 107-year-old Richard Overton's service.

[…]

Overton served in the Pacific during World War II, and Obama regaled the audience with his accomplishments. 'He was there at Pearl Harbor when the battleships were still smoldering. He was there at Okinawa. He was there at Iwo Jima', Obama said.

[…]

As the Afghan war comes to a close, Obama said the nation has a responsibility to ensure that the returning troops are the 'best cared-for and best respected veterans in the world'. The country's obligations to those who served 'endure long after the battle ends', he said.”
