In my recent subject post I judged the President's remarks to the Knesset appropriate but perhaps not rising to the level of eloquence on an undiluted traditional scale. Not so for what was left unsaid because it was understood by all those present. Leaders of self-respecting nation states understand that silence is golden, and the successful ones know when that golden rule applies.
Israel was not born yesterday. Moreover, its 60th birthday marked a point in its history from which a retrospective spans 7 wars with hostile neighbors, more than one per decade of existence. It is a veteran survivor, much like its ally.
In a world of chaos two things can be relied on — Israel knows what it is up against, and it understands what it must do to survive. A corollary to those two knowns is that Israel sees no advantage in tipping its hand.
And if the unthinkable should come to pass, anyone who might have been inclined to celebrate will be among the no-longer thinking.
