Dealing with Pathological Irrationality

“Unfortunately, modern society is well on its way to eliminating rational thinking from the formulation of public policy. More and more policy is being made on the basis of feelings and emotions, primarily fear and anxiety. […] Thankfully, the epidemic of irrationality has not infected all scientists. That’s the good news. Here’s the bad: the scientific process has been corrupted, possibly beyond repair. The attempt to stifle debate on anthropogenic global warming by hijacking scientific boards and character assassination is a perfect example of that. And now we’re seeing it in spades in California and air quality regulation. Watch. And weep.”

The Apostate is one of the faithful bearers of the flickering torch of rational thought. But as are his like-minded colleagues (myself included), he appears to be at a loss as to what can be done, besides watching and weeping.

In the mounting chaos provided by our oxymoronic public servants, it has become clear to me that utilizing rational argument to persuade the irrational of the error of their ways is squandering not only precious rational resources but also irreplaceable time and energy. The leftists among us are hopeless dopes. They are impervious to rational thought. Hence, they must be dealt with without engagement in rational discourse.

It seems to me that, just as youth is wasted on the young, rationality is wasted on the irrational. Therefore, when engaging in rational discourse, ignore the irrational trolls lurking in the woodwork. Address any and all remarks to the rational beings among us, in plain sight so to speak.

Make no effort whatsoever to dumb down or disguise your thoughts in the unlikely hope that the lurking dopes might somehow be persuaded to see the light. They won't. They are not only dumb, but also deaf and blind to their own ignorance.

The advantages of ignoring the ignorant are many. First, it helps preserve your own sanity, for tilting at windmills is like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer (because it feels so good when you stop). Second, the dummkopfs won't get it anyway, but those with a smidgen of vestigial rationality might and, if so, might pause to reflect (which would be a good thing). Third, rational thinking is what got us to this point of immense improvement in the human condition, despite ever-present, overwhelming and pervasive irrationality.

In the long run, the only way the leftists can defeat rational thought is to adopt it. Win-win.

  1. You're right. The Gene Pool has an unbroken series of wins against the Cess Pool. It's the collateral damage that causes me to weep.

  2. I hear you, mon ami. We should not ignore collateral damage, which is what makes our mission as difficult as Israel's against the irrational murderous-scum arrayed against them.

It's always the polarized asymmetric attitude toward collateral damage that neutralizes our moral advantage. But we must guard against accepting a Pyrrhic victory.
