There's an old expression that seems appropriate in such situations: "F*ck 'em if they can't take a joke". But on this occasion, this much maligned President, who as a lame duck would seem to be under no obligation to do so, decided to indulge his antagonist. He repeated what he had previously explained to the questioner in an exclusive interview, in clear and direct language, even contextually defining terms such as "asymmetric warfare". I don't think I've ever heard it explained any better or any clearer.
Nevertheless, his detractors will not be dissuaded from their obnoxious ways, as I am sure he knows, just as President Kennedy, the virtuoso of Presidential news conferences, also understood. I recall, fondly, what JFK once smilingly observed in response to a persistent questioner who wanted to know what he had done for American women, "Whatever it's been, I'm sure it hasn't been enough".
