You might say I am a nonbeliever in the ordinary sense of the word. But I am a meta-believer in some extraordinary sense. I believe there is value in believing.
A belief in some form of organizing force other than gravitation, one that is not unreceptive to human expression, has been evidenced in the archaeological record for tens of millennia up to its ubiquitous presence today. If such belief provided no survival benefit to humanity, it seems reasonable to think it would have been quenched out of humanity's thirst by now. Clearly, that hasn't happened, despite the carnage wrought in its name through the ages.
In that darkest hour, when desperation has subsumed all hope, logic is bereft of solace. At such times, only spirituality, and love, can humanize harsh reality. Perhaps spirituality is an expression of self-love.
