Perception is nine-tenths of the law

“A spokesperson for Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted the government would be considered an ‘employer’ under the law, thus subject to the fines. ‘The health-care legislation signed into law makes it clear that all employees, wherever they work, are treated the same and have access to health care’, Nadeam Elshami said. But neither the speaker's nor Reid's offices offered comment on the constitutional concerns. ‘We haven't seen the memo until now, but stand by the bill’, one aide said. Privately, a second Democratic aide questioned whether the health-care law will ensnare Congress and local governments in the fines, thinking the law will be implemented to avoid such an outcome. The source said exempting the public sector would be politically difficult because it would look hypocritical.” [emphasis added]

Die young stay pretty. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you look good doing it, or at least so perceived. Our politicians have learned the lesson well from our American idolatry.

Having grown up in the aftermath of the Second World War, I have the impression that it wasn't always so in America. Allegiance; patriotism; excellence; self-improvement; a better life for our children, and a better one still for our grandchildren. These were viewed, I recall, as noble concepts. When did "from sea to shining sea" morph into "from the Big Apple to Holyshitwood"?

My impression is that the perversion shifted into high gear with the advent of "flower power". Make love, not war. How quaint. How, exactly, do you make that happen? Just do it? Well, if that's all it takes, why has it eluded humanity for all these millennia? And yet, the hippies touched a national nerve. All you need is love, man. Better still — sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Die young; avoid personal accountability. Let the government take care of you. They print money, don't you know?
