In the milieu of political mass hysteria, change implies increase, though the change pushers are loathe to be specific. 'What do we want? Change! When do we want it? Now!' Change is the code word for free lunch. Specifically, more free lunch.
But change, in its general sense, can mean increase, decrease, or shift unrelated to magnitude. And what middle class America needs is not more but different. Different priorities.
After the necessities of modern life have been secured, and it is a given that they have been for middle America, we don't need bigger flat-screen TV's. We need to take a deep breath and consider what constitutes a life worth living. This is the tricky part — Where Shall Wisdom Be Found? The short answer is "books". Unfortunately, that is also the answer to many other questions, including, "Where shall bullshit be found?". It's a conundrum, exacerbated by a widespread indifference to reading and an alarming inability to read.
So our society's collective wisdom, in lieu of independent research, is ground up into digestible sound bites, spewed forth by "spiritual" leaders, regurgitated by cynical "documenters", and purveyed by even more cynical politicians. And as the (m)asses get bigger and bigger flat-screen TV's, their out-of-control offspring regress to their baser instinctual selves.
Have a nice day.

While the adults are mesmerized by the faux seriousness of "change" politics, the kiddies are reenacting Lord of the Flies.
