August 19, 43 BC » Octavian compels Roman Senate to elect him Consul

First Roman Emperor

Augustus, known as Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus after adoption by his great uncle, Julius Caesar, came into his inheritance after Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. Octavian restored the facade of the Roman Republic, with governmental power vested in the Roman Senate. But in practice he retained his autocratic power over the formally republican state, which became known as the Roman Empire.
