Why do bad things happen to good people? God-fearing people say it is because God works in mysterious ways. Perhaps. Perhaps it just depends on what your definition of "good" and "bad" is. Consider humanity as a statistical collection of more than 6 billion imperfect individuals, partially constrained by the collective knowledge accumulated over the ages, largely motivated by inherited and cultivated traits, and basically driven, as all things are, by the Second Law of thermodynamics. Although anything can happen within such a statistical mix, one thing is extremely unlikely — long-term monotonic change. In a statistical sample of such size and diversity, there will be major fluctuations. Some fluctuations will be very bad indeed.
