It's done all the time

It's done all the time                      h/t Theo
It is the refrain that is heard all the time: "It's done all the time". In other words, there is nothing new under the sun, even "where the sun don't shine", as in the halls of politics. No doubt about it. Politics and the making of sausage have been indistinguishable processes since way before Otto von Bismarck.

But pause for a second, if you will, and consider this knee-jerk excuse for deflecting some egregious instance of a politician caught with his pants down in the vicinity of the cookie jar. Besides the egregious act itself, what else is "done all the time"? Why, it's the knee-jerk excuse, of course.

My point is that the attempt to excuse an egregious political act, whether or not it rises to the level of a crime, is not only lame on its face, but it even rises to the same level of self-incrimination — it's done all the time.

Yet another thing that is done all the time is the denunciation of the said egregious act by political opponents of the egregious actor. And rightly so.
