  1. Henry, I watched an old man on TV, and he was articulating the horror of a minute feeling like an hour, and an hour feeling like a month, and a month feeling like an eternity, so anyone who was there for a few months, had endured eternities. His voice was broken, and the sorrow was clear. Let us be vigilant, be mindful that this could possibly happen again. I don't think that it will, and whether that is a triumph of hope over experience, I don't know. I do believe that the internet, the news, the immediacy, the anything goes attitude, might have an upside. May this never happen again. Too many people are watching.

    1. In The Elements of Style (1918), William Strunk concentrated on specific questions of usage—and the cultivation of good writing—with the recommendation "Make every word tell"; hence, the 17th principle of composition is the simple instruction: "Omit needless words."

  4. Thanks Henry, for not putting that indiscreet comment up for public view. Sometimes, I share too much information and then worry about the repercussions. My husband and children (all grown up) wouldn't appreciate being the subject of my comments.

    It's all true though!

I have written something, a more thoughtful essay than my usual knee-jerk response to everything. hl98..look out! It may take another week but you can critique my effort, if you feel so inclined.

    Best wishes, Henry.
