“In a match as improbable as it was long, Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men’s singles title in a showdown that lasted more than four hours and ended in the 30th game of the fifth set. Federer [didn't break] Roddick’s serve until the final game, which sealed the 5-7, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5), 3-6, 16-14 victory. The 30 games in the fifth set easily set a Wimbledon record and surpassed Federer’s marathon loss to Rafael Nadal in last year’s final, which went to a 16th game in the fifth set.

Federer now takes over sole possession of the most career Grand Slam victories, with 15, pushing him past Pete Sampras, who was on hand to watch his shared record be eclipsed. It was also Federer’s sixth Wimbledon championship, the second most behind the seven won by Sampras and the 19th-century player William Renshaw.”
