The other day I saw and heard (on TV) a US Congressman (don't recall his name, but, of course, he's a Democrat because he was disparaging the President) say, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. This droll remark is erroneously attributed to Big Al (and others), but this Congressman seemed to be passing it off as his own coinage. Be that as it may, it got me thinking about another definition that would better approximate insane behavior.
I submit that, "Cutting off your own nose to spite your Nation's face" constitutes pernicious insanity. It is not merely self destructive; pernicious insanity is destructive to others, and should be treated as felonious conduct. We have had pernicious insanity raging among us for as long as politically motivated enmity has existed; a very long time indeed. If not for the few (and, unfortunately, far between) great leaders (Lincoln, Washington, FDR, Truman, and George W. Bush) ..., but I digress.
A very recent example of pernicious insanity was exhibited by the President of Columbia University when he allowed an avowed enemy of the United States to speak at this world renowned American University. No, this was not an instance of our Constitutional Right of Free Speech. That Sacred Right permits anyone to say whatever they like (within very broad limitations). It does not grant everyone universal access to every venue of propagandizing. Columbia's President cut off his nose to spite America's face.
In our Democratically controlled Congress, we have examples of pernicious insanity seemingly on a daily basis. Every time an opponent of the Administration's policy advocates some action that is transparently motivated by mad-dog hatred of the President, such that the rabid foam cuts off his or her nose and abets America's enemies in the process, it is an act of pernicious insanity. And it is disgusting.
