“Hateful speech against Israel, America and Western values must be responded to in the marketplace of ideas. It cannot be defeated by the censor. It must win the battle for the minds and hearts of open-minded students and faculty.”
— Alan M. Dershowitz, January 12, 2015 (gatestoneinstitute.org)

As is his wont, Mr. Dershowitz looks good on paper, as a renowned legal scholar should. But I suspect he is not being entirely ingenuous here. As most knowledgeable people are aware, American academia today is woefully deficient in open-mindedness.

I think that the biggest fly ("the size of a Buick" to quote Woody Allen) in the ointment of idealistic prescriptions is that our very flawed earthly circumstances are ill suited for idealism. And a principal contributor to our world's incongruity with idealism is the imperfectibility of human nature. Read my lips: Evil. Is. Ubiquitous.

Of course, the Golden Rule is one of the finest concepts on record. But in order to survive, let alone fluorish in the real world, you would be well advised to avoid any action that is a threat to your own well being.
